  • Q
    What is CMC?
Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium (CMC) is a carboxymethylated cellulose derivative. It is a water-soluble polysaccharide compound that can dissolve in water to form a colloidal solution. CMC mainly introduces carboxymethyl groups through the reaction of the hydroxyl groups of cellulose with carboxymethylating agents, thereby improving the solubiility and thiickening properties of cellulose.
Main Features of CMC
  • 1. Water Solubility

  • CMC has good solubility in water, forming a transparent colloidal solution that is easy to process and apply.

  • 2. Thickening

  • CMC can form colloids in water, increase the viscosity and consistency of liquids, and can be used as thickeners, thickeners and emulsifiers.

  • 3. Moisturizing Properties

  • CMC has good moisturizing properties and can be used as a moisturizer in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and other fields.

  • 4. Stability

  • CMC has good stability under different temperature and pH conditions and can be used as emulsifier, stabilizer, etc.

  • 5. Adhesion

  • CMC can form a uniform film with good adhesion and can be used to prepare coatings, adhesives, etc.

sigma mixer
Sigma Mixer for CMC manufacturing
The mixing equipment required to produce CMC is sigma mixer. Since the viscosity of CMC is not very high, hydraulic cylinder discharging is generally used. When stirring CMC, add it slowly to speed up the dissolution of CMC. During the mixing process, sigma mixer needs to be heated, usually between 50-60 degrees Celsius. Then add an organic solvent that is incompatible with CMC but is miscible with water, such as ethanol, glycerol, etc., and the dissolve it, the dissolution speed will be very fast. Finally, the mixed CMC raw materials are packaged after special treatment.
Applications of CMC
  • 1. Food Industry

  • CMC is commonly used as a thickener, stabilizer, emulsifier, etc. in the food industry to prepare various foods and beverages, such as ice cream, jelly, sauces, biscuits, etc.

  • 2. Pharmaceutical Industry

  • CMC is commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry as capsule filler, tablet forming agent, thickener for liquid preparations, etc.

  • 3. Textile Industry

  • CMC is commonly used in the textile industry as adhesives, slurries, printing slurries, etc. for textile processing, printing and dyeing.
