Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) plasticizer is a commonly used industrial chemical that is used to improve the flexibility and durability of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other plastics. DOP is produced through a process known as esterification, which involves reacting phthalic anhydride with 2-ethylhexanol in the presence of a catalyst such as sulfuric acid or zinc oxide. The resulting DOP plasticizer is a colorless, odorless liquid that is insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents.
