What Is Grease Made Of? | JCT Machinery

September 05, 2025

Grease is often called "semi-solid lubricant". It is composed of three parts: base oil + thickener + additives.

JCT provide grease production line turnkey project, feel free to contact us for more information: +86-181 3837 3963 (whatsapp, wechat) or contact@jctmixing.com.

Main Components of Grease
  • 1. Base Oil

  • Accounts for 70-90% of the total grease weight.

  • Determines the grease's lubricity, viscosity, operating temperature range and other properties.

  • Common base oils: Mineral oil (most common, inexpensive and stable), synthetic oils (suitable for high and low temperatures or special operating conditions).

  • 2. Thickener

  • Accounts for 5-20% of the total grease weight.

  • Key ingredient in the grease's "paste-like structure".

  • Common thickeners: Metal soap (most commonly used), complex soap (high-temperature resistance, good mechanical stability), inorganic thickener, and organic thickener (commonly used in high-end grease).

  • 3. Additive

  • Accounts for 1-10% of the total grease weight.

  • Used to improve the overall performance of grease.

  • Common additives: Antioxidant (prevent oil oxidation and deterioration), rust inhibitor (prevent metal corrosion), extreme pressure agent (withstand high loads), antiwear agent, pour point depressant, adhesion agent, etc.

Grease Production Line Equipment Configuration
1. Reactor (saponification reactor): Completes the saponification reaction of fatty acids and alkali solution to generate thickener, which is fully mixed with the base oil.

2. Cooling reactor: Rapidly cools the material after the reaction is complete to prevent overreaction.

3. Mixing disperser: Processes high-viscosity greases, ensuring a uniform blend of base oil and thickener.

4. Homogenizer: Refines the grease fiber structure, improving consistency and mechanical stability.

5. Vacuum degassing system: Removes air and moisture, improving grease stability and service life.

Technical Advantages of Grease Production Line
1. Reactor-based: Reaction temperature, pressure and time can be precisely controlled to ensure complete saponification and stable product performance.

2. Efficient mixing: Targeting the high viscosity of grease, a powerful stirrin gsystem ensures uniform mixing without dead spots.

3. Flexible configuration: Different heating methods and levels of automation can be selected based on customer needs.

4. Energy-saving and environmentally friendly: Equipped with a high-efficiency jacket and insulation layer to reduce energy consumption, a vacuum system minimizes volatile losses.
